Best Shopify Apps for Digital Subscriptions
11 Shopify apps for digital subscriptions, compared: which bill, which deliver files, which lock content, and what each costs as of October 2026.
By the Content Vault team
Search for the best Shopify app for digital subscriptions and you'll mostly find lists of subscription apps. They rank apps by reviews, ratings and price. Those are fair things to check. But a digital subscription has more jobs to do than billing, and billing is what most of those apps do.
This guide looks at 11 apps: what each one does, what it costs and where it falls short. Every price comes from the app's Shopify App Store listing, read in October 2026. Prices change, so check the linked listing before you buy.
Full disclosure: we make Content Vault, one of the apps below. We've tried to give every app a fair "best for" and its real limits.
What a digital subscription needs
A digital subscription has three jobs:
- Recurring billing. Charge the subscriber every month or year, retry failed payments and let them pause or cancel.
- Delivery. Get the files to the subscriber: download emails, a download page, maybe a video stream, and new files as you release them.
- Access control. Only paying subscribers get the files, and access ends when the subscription does.
A subscription app handles the first job. For the other two, a store using one adds a digital-download app and a content-lock app. That's three apps to pay for and keep in sync, because the subscriber's status has to match in all three. An all-in-one app does all three jobs in one place.
The short list
- All in one: Content Vault
- Subscription billing: Recharge, Appstle Subscriptions, Seal Subscriptions, Bold Subscriptions and Shopify Subscriptions
- Digital downloads: Sky Pilot, BIG Digital Downloads and Filemonk
- A separate platform that connects to Shopify: SendOwl
- Content lock: Locksmith
Content Vault
Content Vault bills subscribers, delivers their files and controls their access in one app. A plan can drip new files on a schedule, every set number of days or every month, from each subscriber's own start date or on the same day for everyone. A plan can also open a whole library, or give a download allowance that refills, every 30 days by default. Subscribers get download links by email, on the order confirmation pages and in their customer account.
One setting per plan decides whether subscribers keep their files after they cancel or lose access when their paid period ends. Every plan has unlimited bandwidth and analytics (MRR, churn, ARPU and lifetime value). Starter and up add PDF stamping with the buyer's name and email, IP address limits and fraud detection. Plus adds video streaming.
Price as of October 2026 (listing): Pay As You Go is free to install, with 4.95% + $0.25 per transaction and 1 GB of storage. Starter is $29/month + 1.95% + $0.15 (10 GB), Scale is $49/month + 0.95% + $0.10 (150 GB) and Plus is $99/month + 0.50% (500 GB). The paid plans have a 10-day free trial.
Best for: stores whose subscription is digital content, and who'd rather run one app than three.
Limits:
- There's a transaction fee on every plan, charged on each successful payment.
- Pay As You Go allows up to 2 subscription plans.
- Video streaming is on Plus only.
- It doesn't sell one-time downloads. Our sister app, ABC Digital Downloads, does.
- It's built for digital content, not boxes that ship.
Content Vault tags each subscriber in Shopify, for example "Subscriber" and "Subscribed - Basic" for a plan called Basic, and removes the tags when they cancel or expire. If you also want to hide store pages from non-subscribers, a lock app like Locksmith can use those tags.
Recharge
Recharge is built for fast-growing subscription brands. Its listing highlights a no-code customer portal where subscribers skip, swap and reschedule, plus churn prevention, failed-payment recovery, bundles, loyalty rewards and retention analytics.
Price as of October 2026 (listing): $25/month with no transaction fees for your first 50 subscribers. The listing doesn't say what that plan costs past 50 subscribers. Starter is $99/month + 1.49% + 19¢ per transaction, and Plus is $499/month + 1.34% + 19¢. There's a 60-day free trial.
Best for: fast-growing brands with physical subscriptions that need deep retention tools.
Limits: its listing names digital products and memberships as subscription types, but it doesn't list file delivery. You'd add a download app and a content-lock app.
Appstle Subscriptions
Appstle's listing covers subscriptions, subscription boxes, build-a-box, bundles, loyalty features and a customer portal, with 24/7 human support.
Price as of October 2026 (listing): free up to $500 a month in subscription revenue. Starter is $10/month up to $5,000 a month, Business is $30/month up to $15,000 and Business Premium is $100/month up to $100,000. Paid plans have no transaction fee, save 20% billed yearly and come with a 14-day free trial.
Best for: low-cost billing that grows with your revenue.
Limits: no file delivery listed, so you'd add a download app and a content-lock app.
Seal Subscriptions
Seal's listing covers product subscriptions, memberships, free trials and subscription boxes, with full API and webhook access and, on paid plans, a passwordless customer portal.
Price as of October 2026 (listing): free for up to 50 subscriptions, with no transaction fee. SuperSale is $5.95/month for up to 100 subscriptions, Rising Star is $9.95 for up to 250 and Legend is $24.95 for up to 500, with bigger plans available. There's a 30-day free trial, and yearly billing saves 20%.
Best for: flat pricing that steps up with your subscription count, not your revenue.
Limits: no file delivery listed, so you'd add a download app and a content-lock app.
Bold Subscriptions
Bold's listing covers recurring subscriptions and subscription boxes, prepaid and pay-as-you-go plans, cancellation flows, automatic dunning and APIs for developers.
Price as of October 2026 (listing): Launch is $24.99/month + a 2% transaction fee, Grow is $49.99/month + 1% and Scale is $74.99/month + 0.9%. Every plan has unlimited subscribers and a 30-day free trial.
Best for: stores that want prepaid plans and developer tools.
Limits: a percentage fee on every plan, and no file delivery listed.
Shopify Subscriptions
Shopify's own subscription app. Its listing covers auto-billed subscriptions that renew weekly, monthly or yearly, with discounts. Customers can cancel, skip or pause, and you get subscription reporting.
Price as of October 2026 (listing): free.
Best for: the simplest billing, at no app cost.
Limits: its listing names digital products as a subscription type, but it doesn't list file delivery. You'd add a download app and a content-lock app.
Sky Pilot
Sky Pilot is a digital-download app with branded download pages. Its listing says it works with subscription apps to deliver files on a recurring basis.
Price as of October 2026 (listing): a free plan (100MB of storage, 1GB of bandwidth a month), Starter at $9/month, Lite at $24.99/month and Growth at $54.99/month. Growth is the plan with the subscription integration, video streaming and PDF stamping. It includes unlimited storage and 200GB of bandwidth a month, then $1/GB. Yearly billing saves 17%, and paid plans have a 14-day free trial.
Best for: adding downloads and streaming to a subscription app you already use.
Limits: you need Growth for subscriptions, plus a separate billing app. Bandwidth past 200GB a month costs extra.
BIG Digital Downloads
BIG sells digital files and license keys.
Price as of October 2026 (listing): free for 250MB and 50 orders. Starter is $9.99/month with PDF stamping, download limits, 15GB of storage and 50GB of bandwidth. Pro is $19.99/month and Growth is $49.99/month.
Best for: one-time downloads and license keys on a budget.
Limits: its listing doesn't mention subscriptions.
Filemonk
Filemonk is a digital-download app with a quick setup.
Price as of October 2026 (listing): free for 250MB and 50 orders a month. Lite is $10/month with unlimited orders, 10GB, download limits and PDF watermarking. Plus is $25/month with unlimited storage. Paid plans have a 14-day free trial.
Best for: one-time downloads.
Limits: its listing doesn't mention subscriptions.
SendOwl
SendOwl is its own selling platform. Its features page covers subscriptions, drip content and PDF stamping, with a checkout you embed on your website, Shopify or other platforms.
Price as of October 2026 (listing): priced by yearly sales, with all features on every plan. Launch is $39/month for up to $10,000 a year in sales, Grow is $87/month for up to $36,000 and Scale is $159/month for up to $100,000. Billed yearly, they're $32.50, $72.50 and $132.50 a month (pricing page). There's a 7-day free trial.
Best for: sellers on several platforms, not just Shopify.
Limits: it's a second system next to your store, with its own checkout.
Locksmith
Locksmith locks products, pages, collections or your whole store. Its keys can be customer tags, passcodes or customer location.
Price as of October 2026 (listing): "pay what feels good". The suggested price is $12/month on Shopify's Basic plan, $29 on Grow, $99 on Advanced and $199 on Shopify Plus. There's a 15-day free trial.
Best for: hiding store pages and products from anyone who isn't a subscriber.
Limits: it doesn't bill subscribers or deliver files.
Side by side
"Not listed" means the app's App Store listing doesn't list that feature. It doesn't mean you can't connect the app to one that does. Prices are as of October 2026.

What a complete setup costs
To do what Content Vault does, a subscription app needs three more tools beside it:
- A download app. Sky Pilot Growth ($54.99) is the only download plan here whose listing names a subscription integration.
- A content-lock app. Locksmith's suggested price on Shopify Basic is $12.
- Per-subscriber drip. Content Vault can unlock each subscriber's files from their own start date. Sky Pilot's scheduled releases give every customer the same date, so per-subscriber schedules need another tool. Our comparison posts estimate it at $30 to $60 a month.
So each stack below is the billing app's cheapest plan at that size, plus $96.99 to $126.99 a month for the other three tools. SendOwl drips content itself, so it needs no drip tool.
Here's the monthly cost for a store with 25, 50 or 75 subscribers paying $19 a month, where each subscriber's files unlock from their own start date. Prices are as of October 2026:
| Setup | 25 subscribers ($475 MRR) | 50 subscribers ($950 MRR) | 75 subscribers ($1,425 MRR) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Content Vault, one app | $29.76 (Pay As You Go) | $55.03 (Starter) | $68.04 (Starter) |
| SendOwl, on its own | $39 (Launch; $32.50 billed yearly) | $87 (Grow; $72.50 billed yearly) | $87 (Grow; $72.50 billed yearly) |
| Shopify Subscriptions stack | $96.99–126.99 | $96.99–126.99 | $96.99–126.99 |
| Seal stack | $96.99–126.99 (Free) | $96.99–126.99 (Free) | $102.94–132.94 (SuperSale) |
| Appstle stack | $96.99–126.99 (Free) | $106.99–136.99 (Starter) | $106.99–136.99 (Starter) |
| Recharge stack | $121.99–151.99 ($25 plan) | $121.99–151.99 ($25 plan) | $231.47–261.47 (Starter) |
| Bold stack | $131.48–161.48 (Launch) | $140.98–170.98 (Launch) | $150.48–180.48 (Launch) |
MRR is monthly recurring revenue. Each stack's range comes from the drip-tool estimate. Content Vault's numbers include its transaction fees, and so do Bold's and Recharge's. Past 50 subscribers, the Recharge stack uses Starter.
At all three sizes, Content Vault costs the least, even against the low end of every range and the other apps' yearly prices.
The stack prices leave out a few things:
- Bandwidth. Sky Pilot Growth includes 200GB a month, then $1/GB. Content Vault's bandwidth is unlimited on every plan.
- Locksmith's price grows with your Shopify plan. The suggested price is $29 a month on Grow.
- Compatibility. Sky Pilot's listing says it works with subscription apps. Before you build a stack, check with Sky Pilot that it supports the billing app you pick.
- Upkeep. Three or four apps means three or four bills and settings pages, and one subscriber status to keep in sync.
Card processing fees aren't in the table either. Shopify's apply to the Shopify setups, and SendOwl's checkout uses Stripe or PayPal.
Which should you pick?
For a digital subscription on Shopify, Content Vault is the best overall choice. Here's why:
- One app instead of three or four. Content Vault bills subscribers, delivers their files, keeps those files for active subscribers and unlocks each subscriber's files from their own start date. Doing the same with a subscription app takes a download app, a content-lock app and a drip tool, all kept in sync.
- The fee per payment drops as you grow. It's 4.95% + 25¢ on Pay As You Go, 1.95% + 15¢ on Starter, 0.95% + 10¢ on Scale and 0.50% on Plus.
- Shopify's own checkout. Subscribers pay through your store's Shopify checkout, like any other order, not on a second checkout like SendOwl's.
- Protection and streaming built in. PDF stamping, fraud detection and IP address limits come with Starter and up. Plus adds video streaming.
The other apps fit other jobs:
- Physical subscriptions that ship: Recharge for deep retention tools, Appstle for billing priced by revenue, Seal for flat pricing by subscription count, Bold for prepaid plans and Shopify Subscriptions for the simplest setup.
- You already sell physical subscriptions and want to add a digital perk: keep your billing app. Add a download app with a subscription integration, and Locksmith if you hide pages.
- You sell one-time downloads, not subscriptions: Sky Pilot, Filemonk or BIG Digital Downloads. Our sister app, ABC Digital Downloads, does this too.
- You sell on several platforms, not just Shopify: SendOwl.
